Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley

Attached below is a downloadable PDF of the entire 1848 text of Squier and Davis's archaeological descriptions and wood engravings of Archaic and Woodland period Indigenous North American earthworks and artifacts of Eastern North America. On page 218ff., Figs. 114, 115 they include images and a discussion of bannerstones that they identify as "simply for ornament and display." This text was the first body of work published by the newly formed Smithsonian Institute, available on their website for open use.
